When Millie Dunn stepped off the train in Scotland in early 1944 Millie Dunn stepped off a train in Scottland. It was the first time she had ever been away from her native North Carolina.
The Scottish had never seen a black person to that point - the culture shock was notable she later said.
She was part of the Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only all-black Women’s Army Corps unit to serve overseas. She was on her way to serve in Birmingham, England during the final year of World War II.
The — the 6888th battalion was tasked with delivering the backlog of mail for American servicemen.
Ms. Veasey had a long career working at her alma mater in Raleigh, now called St. Augustine’s University, and served at president of the local N.A.A.C.P. in the mid-1960s.
