The ’60s rhythm-and-blues showman with the over-sized pompadour has died.
It all began in 1950s, writing songs, singing country and rockabilly. His most famous song, “Last Kiss,” became a major hit for two other groups, 35 years apart.
By the time the 1960s arrived he was a Vegas headliner, appeared on national television and at the iconic Apollo theater in Harlem.
He became most famous for his platinum blond pompadour that towered six inches or more above his head. It is said he modeled his look after Marilyn Monroe and a wrestler from the 1950s, Gorgeous George.
