Tommy Nobis, Linebacker First Atlanta Falcon, DEAD @ 74
He was the first player, a middle linebacker, drafted by expansion team Atlanta Falcons. Nobis struggled with physical and cognitive ailments at the end of his career like so many former National Football League players.
He finished seventh in the Heisman Trophy balloting — highest defensive showing and found himself on the covers of Life Magazine as well as Sports Illustrated. In the fall of 1965, he was drafted first by the Falcons, but he also caught the attention of the Houston Oilers of the American Football League. A bidding war followed with the Falcons winning.
