Had a long struggle with kidney disease and succumbed to cardiac arrest. Sadly, there were stories of substance abuse as well.
Recognized as an innovator throughout his career. He was the leader of the RH Factor in the 21st century, which was an appealing blend of jazz, funk, neo-soul, contemporary gospel and hip-hop.
Hargrove was influenced by the musical collection of his father. He too was a versatile brass player. While in school in his home town of Dallas, TX, he caught the attention of a visiting Wynton Marsalis who invited the young Hargrove to sit in and play with him. Marsalis also helped him book shows and begin his professional career.
