Singer Barbara Alston DEAD @ 74
She sang 'Da Doo Ron Ron’ with the 1960s group the Crystals. At 17 she was a founding member of the group. While searching for new acts producer Phil Spector, overheard a Crystals rehearsing at the famous music industry centered building in New York, the Brill Building, and the rest as they say was history.
The Crystals had a strained relationship with the Spector, he used the groups name on tracks sung by Darlene Love, including the No. 1 hit “He’s a Rebel” and its follow-up, “He’s Sure the Boy I Love.”
Spector was sued by Alston in order to receive her share of royalties from the Crystals.
They regrouped in 1963 and it was at his time they released hits including “Da Doo Ron Ron” and “Then He Kissed Me” before Ms. Alston left the group in 1965 to take care of her son.
As an aside, famously, Spetor was sent to prison for murder of his girlfriend in 2003.
