Crooner Vic Damone DEAD @ 89
In addition to his music career Damone starred in several television series, including "The Vic Damone Show" on NBC, and hit movies including "Kismet" and "Rich, Young and Pretty," but the singer did not consider himself a true crossover star.
Some of his biggest hits were "You're Breaking My Heart" and "On the Street Where You Live." Through the years he recorded more than 2,500 recordings. His fame and popularity can at a time when lounge singers like Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Dean Martin and Perry Como were also having great success.
At 14, forced to drop out of high school, Damone was an usher at a theater in New York City. He bumped into Perry Como on an elevator there and in between began to sing. Como encouraged him to keep singing.
He had more good luck, in 1946 he met Frank Sinatra at a charity event. Sinatra introduced his performance complete with complements.
Not a bad way to start a career.
