Mort Walker, Creator of 'Beetle Bailey' Comic Strip DEAD @ 94
At age 11 Walker began publishing cartoons and is credited with more than a half-dozen comic strips in his career including ''Boner's Ark" and "Sam & Silo." It was the slacker Beetle, Beetle Bailey which proved to be his greatest career success.
The character that would develop into Beetle Bailey was first scene in a Saturday Evening Post cartoon in the late 40s. The character formally was named and launched as "Beetle Bailey" in 1950.
Appearing up to 1,800 newspapers was also known to spark controversy. As far away as Japan, the US military newspaper Stars & Stripes dropped the cartoon thinking it might spark disrespect of its officers.
