Creator of 'WKRP in Cincinnati' and Director of 'Police Academy'
An Emmy winner and seven-time nominee.
He directed Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler and Diane Keaton in The First Wives Club, he co-wrote Guarding Tess starring Shirley MacLaine as a first lady and Nicolas Cage as a Secret Service agent trying to protect her.
On TV there were many stars featured on WKRP in Cincinnati. A TV show set at an Ohio radio station aired for four seasons beginning in 1978. It starred Howard Hesseman, Loni Anderson, Tim Reid, Gary Sandy and Gordon Jump, and Richard Sanders.
The station call letters were a pun on "W-crap." Many speculated if the show was based on a real-life radio station. Yes, it was.
"Jerry Blum who was the general manager of WQXI told me that he had been fired from a Texas radio station for throwing turkeys out of a helicopter. I turned to Jerry and said, 'You just won me an Emmy.'"
