Inventor Robert N. Hall DEAD @ 96
Inventor of the microwave
He built the first solid-state laser in 1962. During World War II, he designed a magnetron to jam enemy radar that also turned out to be able to melt a candy bar. That laser was adapted to create the microwave oven.
His presence is also seen at nearly every checkout counter — the laser scanner with that little red blinking light that reads the bar codes on everything we buy.
Needless to say...brilliant.
