Frank E. Petersen, First Black General in Marines, DEAD @ 83
He was a former sugar-cane plantation worker Born in St. Croix, the Virgin Islands, but grew up in Topeka, Kan.
Frank E. Petersen Jr., suffered extremely difficult racial indignities as a military enlistee in the 1950s including an arrest for suspicion of impersonating a lieutenant. He became the first black aviator and the first black general in the Marine Corps.
