She helped reveal the structure of molecules in the 1950's. Isabella L. Karle, a crystallographer, so received the National Medal of Science in 1995 among other major honors in her field.
Dr. Karle’s career required her to overcome the discouragement of a teacher who once told her on the impropriety of chemistry as a topic of study for young women.
