Winnie Madikizela-Mandela DEAD @ 81

She was the well known Anti-Apartheid Activist and the wife of the late South African leader Nelson Mandela.

While Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison, Madikizela-Mandela was one of the most outspoken critics of South Africa's white government.

In the 1980s, she was became known for revving up crowds of young, black activists.  Her speeches were fiery denouncing the country's system of racial segregation.  She was a polarizing figure who became mired in controversy.  One of her bodyguards was abducted and murdered and that event lead to her conviction for kidnapping.  She went to prison and eventually got the sentence reduced to a fine.

There were more controversies to come, but at the end of her life the African National Congress released the following statement: "dedicated most of her adult life to the cause of the people and for this was known far and wide as the Mother Of The Nation."
