NPR Newscaster Carl Kasell DEAD @ 84

In a career that spanned more than three decades his deep baritone was broadcast every morning.

His voice was authoritative and unwavering no matter what the story.  Later in his career he would expose a lighter side and a sense of humor when he took part in the Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! news quiz show.

Like many of us, he got the radio bug during childhood (my childhood decades after his).  His fascination with the medium began with his grandmother's windup Victrola and her collection of records. "I would sit there sometimes and play those records, and I'd put in commercials between them," he recalled. "And I would do a newscast just like the guy on the radio did."
