Kofi Annan, Former UN Secretary-General DEAD @ 80

The Nobel Peace Laureate passed away peacefully following a short illness.

Born in Ghana, he was recognized with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001 for his far-reaching humanitarian work.

He has the distinction of being the first black African to serve in the UN as the world's top diplomat. He served two terms, from Jan. 1, 1997 to Dec. 31, 2006.

It should be noted that during his tenure, Annan presided over some of the worst failures and scandals at the world body, and some of the most turbulent periods in UN history. The UN was founded in 1945.
